The framer called today

to let me know my Terry Medaris, Rio Rincon, piece was ready to be picked up. It was held in captivity for 4 weeks or there abouts which isn't really all that long...just seemed like it. I think I like it, it's growing on me.
I am not sure I'm completely happy with the cutting of the triple mats, however, I won't complain. First I noticed there were a few cuts that weren't executed exactly along the lines of stitching, I also felt that the blue/green mat was a little large relative to the stitched piece. I also thought that the width of the yellow/tan mat should have been the same as the purple mat. I would have preferred that the purple mat be on top. The overall size of the piece and the order in which the mats were placed was not discussed.
I do like the framer I'm working with, think they're very professional and have been in business for a long time. I primarily think that the unusual cutting of the mat template must have been very difficult to execute. Maybe not, maybe I'm wrong.
I am working on three smaller companion pieces that will be framed together in one piece, using the same framing as Rio Rincon. I may have some changes made at that time. It would be great to hear your thoughts and opinions.

  1. Hi Madonna,

    Hmmmm...

I looked at the finished piece in detail before reading your comments. Honest I did! :-)

I did notice that the stitching doesn't line up quite straight but I'm not sure if that will be noticeable from a distance. I also noticed that the mat edges weren't cut straight and I definitely noticed this from the picture in the post.

I then read your comments and went back and looked at this project in detail again. Since you asked, here is what I think... :-)

I agree that the blue/green mat is cut larger than it needs to be for the size of the stitched piece. You don't see the stitched portion, but rather your eye lands and stays on the blue/green mat.

I also don't like the order and color of the three mats. It looks incredibly busy to me as opposed to enhancing the design. I think it might look a lot better with just one or two mats without all of the cut edges.

I also agree that I don't like the order of the color of the mats.

Have you thought about going back to the framer and letting them know that you are disappointed with this project to see what can be worked out? The not straight edges should definitely be fixed if nothing else. Since I'm sure you paid quite a bit for this framing they should be willing to at least correct their mistakes. If not, even if you've liked them on previous projects, I would another framer. :-)

I would also see about changing out the mats for one or two mats without all of the cuts so that you see the stitched project as opposed to the fancy mats.

I would definitely suggest that you have this reframed, especially if you are going to see the matting and the un-straight edges everytime you look at this piece.

Every couple of years, I'm able to attend the Woodlawn Needlework show. There is usually one design which has been stitched by different framers and is framed in different ways. You can really see how good framing enhances a project and how bad framing detracts from a project.

I find it sad/frustrating that someone will spend so much time on a project and then skimp on framing materials so as to save money (I know you didn't with this project). This is especially obvious when the project is placed near one which is framed correctly!

Please let us know what you decide to do. :-)

  2. Madonna,
I too looked the whole thing over before posting. I agree with Cyn and I would take the piece back and asked them to look it over with you. I had to do that with my framer on the Tulip Study piece. They did not have the mat cut straight and I made two trips--the second with my T square to get it corrected.(Only because the usual contact was not there, and the young fill in just did not want to see it.) They made the corrections and I just dropped off another piece this week.

  3. Thank you Cyn and Pat, your comments are most appreciated. They confirm what I believe to be true and after taking to an EGA meeting for show and tell, more commentary along the same lines. There was mention that it looks much better in person than on line and I agree. Will let you know what I ultimately decide. Thanks for the encouragement to stand up for fairness too.
