Identity Crisis

Just between you and me and speaking confidentially, I've been experiencing a blog header identity crisis lately. I just couldn't seem to find any thing that really suited me or my blog-anything original that is. I kept changing my header photo from one thing to another which was in direct conflict with my perceived concept of what a blog header should stand for: a consistent and, therefore, readily recognizable theme that says, oh that's the so-and-so blog.

It finally dawned on me that I could use this name tag that I've been wearing for years when attending most of my ANG and EGA chapter meetings.  It's a bit worn and raggedy and is more of a southwest theme rather than Colorado (you can take the girl out of the desert but you cannot take the desert out of the girl), but it will do until I can replace it with something else. Thank you for bearing with me during this period of header block nonsense. If you are a fellow blogger, how did you decide what to use for your blog header?

  1. This is an interesting question for me because bloggers always talk about their headers and page designs and I hardly ever see them. If I had to query each and every blog that I read, I would read very few. Instead I pull them all into Google Reader via RSS and never miss one. I see all the pictures and can even RSS comments to my own blog or others. The only time I see a designed page is if I briefly page through looking for a place to leave comments. So although I do like your southwestern name tag, I won't see it again until I make another comment.

  2. Thank you Robin.

And Kathryn I am glad you explained a little about google reader. It's a feature I've heard of but never really took the time to figure out.

When you "follow" someone's blog on blogger, you get their latest posts with photos on your dashboard page without actually visiting their blog. Even though I follow blogs, I typically access them through my bloglist...don't ask me why, I think I do it that way out of habit. Plus I think I'm afraid I might miss something if I don't actually visit their blog! LOL!

I see now how much easier it would be but didn't realize that you could accomplish the same thing with google reader. It's an interesting point though, I wonder how many people strickly access blogs via google reader and other services?

There are many things that escape my full understanding on the internet, the feeds like RSS and others are just the tip of the iceberg. LOL! I really should get out more.

    Thank you both for commenting.

  3. I mostly read blogs via Google Reader so I don't see many headers. I change mine occasionally. I want something that is recognizable but stitch-related. I think your name tag is a great idea!

Wonder if any of mine will make a good header?

  4. I too read blogs via Google Reader. So I rarely see a header or even most of the post if they do that one line post thing where you have to click to read more. (I wish people wouldn't do that)I picked "Painted Stitches" for my header, it's also my web header. I love your name tag! What a great idea!!

  6. Hi Madonna,

I like your choice for your blog header. Putting your name tag with all those special pins attached to it is an excellent idea. This way, I know right away what your name is, in case I forget (grinning).

As for mine, I decided to put a few photos of projects that I especially like and that go well together.

Now about reading blogs via Google Reader or accessing them directly from my blog. I actually prefer to access them from my blog so that by clicking on the selected blog brings me directly there and if the blog owner is interested in knowing who has visited her blog, then she can see that I have stopped by to pay my little visit.

I don't think that you save much time by going the google reader road for those of us who have blogs. It may be a different ball game for somebody who does not.

Anyway, my preference is to drop in and kind of say "hi" even if I don't leave comments every single time I visit.
