These two little ornies are tippy-toeing off to the finishers. I surprised myself as to how quickly both of these fun projects worked up. Choosing, for the most part, non-strandable threads makes life a lot easier. I used things like Kreinik braids and Petite Very Velvet, perle coton.
The Chapter name tag is also done and so is the cuff bracelet. I won't show a photo of it since it's a gift for a close friend. Shhhhh, it's a surprise.

Making their way out of my queue closet are the three companions to Rio Rincon. One is completely stitched and the other two will soon be off the stretchers. My plan is to use the same framing choice used for Rio.
These will be matted and framed together.
I've enjoyed stitching the Terry Medaris canvases but I am always at a quandary as to what to do with the heavy black outlining. Outlining doesn't seem right, nor does ignoring it. I would appreciate some advice on how to handle outlining as it is something that comes up from time to time and I always have trouble with it. These were no exception. In varying stages of completion I hope to have these to the framer by week's end or early next. So, in part, this is what I've been up to lately. What's new at your zoo?

Hi Madonna,
ReplyDeleteDon't you just love quick projects? Love the two new stockings and I'm looking forward to seeing pictures when they come back from the finishers.
The chapter name tag is very clever. Isn't that also the letters ANG for the base?
Have you finished stitching all 3 of the Terry Medaris canvases?
As far as black outlining, my thoughts follow... :-)
Sometimes you need the heavy black outline as that is part of the design. But you can tone it down by using a dark gray or blue thread as that might not be as harsh visually. The other option that I've used is if possible to stich over the black outline with the Stem or Outline stitch in a thiner dark black/gray/blue. You still get the outline but it will have a lower/less presence and won't look as harsh.
Let us know what you decide to do in future projects. :-)

These are charming little southwest pieces! I see what you mean about the outlining. It is hard to know what to do. When I do outline on canvas, I frequently use a whipped backstitch as it goes around curves nicely. And I also will use a color that is the same or just slightly darker than the fill color. I think I would try to not do the outlines on the clouds.
ReplyDeleteThank you to Cyn and Liz for your comments. Especially for your suggestions on how to tackle outlining. Sometimes I really wonder why designers put in such outlines if they aren't intended to be stitched. Nonetheless, it's always a challenge for me, an overly literal person, to know exactly what to do. I like your suggestions on how to tone the lines down and will try the whipped backstitch. Two of the TM canvas' are done; I have the tee pee canvas about halfway done so your advice about the clouds couldn't have come at a better time. Thank you both.
ReplyDeleteHi Madonna,
ReplyDeleteGlad you like both of our ideas.
Please let us know what works on the clouds. Now, I'm curious to see what helps on that particular canvas. :-)
